Mr. Horace Coleman, 89, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025, at his daughters’ home.
Horace was born June 13, 1935, in Atmore, Alabama, the son of R.C. and Zora L. (Herbert) Coleman. He married Mildred Williamson on August 2, 1958. They later divorced but remained good friends. Surviving are his four children: Karen (the late Bob) Meredith of Galesburg, Gary (Eren) Coleman of Weatherford, Texas, Bradley (Diana) Coleman of Belmond, Iowa and Karl Mixon of Galesburg.
He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, Alisha, Summer, Tara, Laci, Tamaria, Shabrell, Bradley Jr., Shaleesha, Maya, Shyla, Kourtney, Tralise, Jasmine and Yvonne; his sister, Francis Bailey of Florida; sister-in-law, Mamie Coleman of Bloomington, Illinois; a host of many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Wilbur Owen, Henry, Jimmy, Morris and Dorris Coleman; three sisters, Nora Mae Herbert, Ola Mae Cunningham and Louise Britton; his grandson, A.J. Coleman and his great grandson, John Robert Hendricks.
Horace worked for over twenty years as a carman for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a former member of the W.L. Darrow Masonic Lodge and former member of the Second Baptist Church. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching the games with a cold Bud Light. Growing up with a large tight knit family, he loved when his brother, Dorris would visit him from Kansas. You could often find Horace out fishing, playing slots at the casino or simply taking a ride stopping to play his lucky numbers at either the Hy-Vee Spirits or HiLo Grocery.
Visitation is scheduled for 2:30-3:30 pm Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. A Memorial Service will follow at 3:30 pm at the chapel with Rev. Tyson Parks III officiating. Cremation will be accorded.
