Mr. Richard G. “Dick” Simmons, Jr., 88, of Abingdon, Illinois died 8:10 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2025, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois. 

He was born April 20, 1936, in Canton, Illinois to Richard G. and Florence M. (Ahlborn) Simmons, Sr.  He married Shirley Johnson on June 14, 2005, in Abingdon.  She preceded him in death on March 12, 2022.

Surviving is a stepson, Rod (and Christy) Riggs of Galesburg, Illinois, three grandchildren, Connor Riggs, Collin Riggs, and Lauren Riggs, and two very special friends, George and Freda Schwarner.  He was preceded in death by his parents. 

Dick worked as a tech for the former Galesburg State Research Hospital for several years and later was transferred to the Lincoln State Research Hospital.  He was of the Catholic faith and kept a strong belief.  He enjoyed watching the Wheel of Fortune and any type of sporting event, especially the Illini.  He loved betting on “the ponies” and buying lottery tickets.  He also loved spending time with friends with a cup of coffee at Carolyn’s or enjoying a meal at Club 41. 

As Dick requested, cremation will be accorded.  A graveside committal service will be announced at a later date.  Cremation burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery.  Memorial may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be shared at www.h-p-w.com
