Mabel Lum Haines was born in Panama City, Panama on August 4, 1943, and died February 22, 2025, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg, Illinois. She married Sam Haines on August 23, 1969, in Panama.

Mabel was born into a large Asian Hawaiian Pacific Island family in Panama. Her grandparents were born in Hawaii and migrated to Panama in 1910.

During their 55 years of marriage, Sam and Mabel moved 22 times following Sam’s career and lived in 12 states. They made many friends across the USA.

Mabel is survived by her husband Sam of 55 years; two sisters, Min Mossman and Estela Long; sister-in-law, Donna Medina; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Estela and Lloyd Lum; two brothers, William Lum and Lloyd Lum; and a sister, Julia Gomez.

Mabel will be cremated with Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral and Cremation Services. Her ashes will be scattered in a ceremony later this spring at Walnut Hills United Methodist Church Scattering Garden in Urbandale, Iowa.
