Mary L. (Norpel) Bennett

Mary L. (Norpel) Bennett, 91, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 2:55 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2025, at Seminary Manor of Galesburg. She was born April 7, 1933, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Ellen (Nye) Norpel. She was raised and educated in Davenport.

She married Loren Arthur Steines in 1949 and together they had 4 children, she later married William Bennett in 1986, and they both preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memory are; children, David Steines of Monmouth, Sheri (James) Hanson of Little York, Illinois, Rick Steines of Lyles, Tennessee and Mike (Marsha) Steines of Galesburg, Illinois; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren and sisters, Sally (Cliff) Seims and Nancy (Gaylord) Ralston. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and one sister, Barbara Schroeder.

Mary worked for Hy-Vee in Burlington for over 20 years until her retirement in 1989. She enjoyed crafting, reading and watching movies. She also loved collecting Beanie Babies and bird figurines. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cremation rites have been accorded with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be mailed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 780 W Central Park Avenue Davenport, IA 52804 or left in the care of the funeral home. Inurnment will be in the Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
