Mrs. Donna J. McCarthy, 97, of Galesburg, Illinois died 1:39 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025, at Celebrate Nursing Home, Moline, Illinois. 

She was born on November 29, 1927, in Kewanee, Illinois to Ross E. and Juanita (Hanson) Hartzell.  She married John W. Johnson on May 2, 1948, in Kewanee.  He preceded her in death in September of 1963.  She later married Fred H. McCarthy on June 4, 1966, in Galesburg.  He preceded her in death on February 7, 1996. 

Surviving is a son, Daniel Johnson of Coal Valley, Illinois, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, James Johnson on September 12, 1994, a daughter-in-law, Stephanie Johnson on July 13, 2015, and a sister, Mary Jane Lundeen. 

Donna graduated from Galva High School in 1945.  She was a receptionist for Dr. Hambrecht and Dr. Crowell for five years.  Later, she was a secretary for the Dean of Student’s Office at Knox College in Galesburg for 17 years and retired in 1977.  She was a devoted member of the Grace Anglican Church in Galesburg.  She was a member of the St. Margaret’s Guild and volunteered at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for 19 years.  Donna enjoyed bowling and loved playing Bridge with her friends.  She was an avid Chicago White Sox and Illini fan. 

A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  Father Shawn Doubet will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to the Grace Anglican Church.  Online condolences may be shared at www.h-p-w.com
