John Merrill Baxter, 88, of Galesburg, IL, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at his home.
He was born June 26, 1936, in Kirkwood, IL, the son of Charles A. and Mattie Josephine (Williamson) Baxter. John was raised and educated in Kirkwood, IL, graduating from Kirkwood High School in 1954.
John proudly served with the United States Navy and earned the rank of Machinist’s Mate Petty Officer 2nd Class.
John married Bonnie Jean Oldham in Norfolk, VA, on September 20, 1960; she preceded him in death on June 12, 2018.
John worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation Warren County Garage for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah S. Baxter of Monmouth, IL; one son, James M. (Cyndi) Baxter of Alexis, IL; two granddaughters, Stephanie S. (Breanna) Johnson of Monmouth, IL, and Jessica L. Brownlee of East Galesburg, IL; honorary great-granddaughters, Madison & Riley Headspeth. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, and four sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2025, at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will take place following the services with interment in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood.
