Ten teams from Warren, Knox, Henderson, Fulton, Hancock, and McDonough counties gathered in Macomb on April 8 to compete in the annual Land Use Council #4 Envirothon. This competition tests students’ environmental knowledge and problem-solving skills. The team from Monmouth-Roseville High School, consisting of Leslie Albert, Carter Thorton, Molly McVey, Camden Johnson, and Haley Frakes, took home first place, shares Shawnee Sheehan with the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District.

“All of the groups were given a task to create a presentation and give an oral presentation to judges about clear-cutting forests, mainly in the areas in Canada that are facing some clear-cutting possibilities right now, and try to convince us on what would be the better route to go,” explains Sheehan. “Whether that is straight clear-cutting or what, they could do more conservation-minded.”

The Monmouth-Roseville Envirothon team advanced to the state Envirothon competition, which will take place May 5th and 6th in Monticello.
