James W. “Ciderman” Cooper

James W. “Ciderman” Cooper, 81, of Abingdon, died at 2:25 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2025, in OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

He was born November 20, 1943, in Galesburg, the son of Clarence W. and Minnie B. (Henzen) Cooper. He married Gloria Rae Sweet on May 11, 1964, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2019, after over 55 years of marriage.

He is survived by his children, Michael (Eve) Cooper of Mississippi, James (Heather) Cooper of Paw Paw, Kenneth Cooper of Abingdon, and Crystal Cooper of Galesburg; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra Cartee; a great granddaughter, Kaisley; a brother, Gordon; and sisters June Cooper and Carole Hollenback.

Ciderman was a self-employed siding and roofing installer. He was raised and educated in Knoxville and has lived in Abingdon since 1980. He enjoyed working on small engines, craft work, and fishing.

James served in the United States Army for 3 years during the Vietnam War.
