Sandburg has recently been awarded a $1.8 million grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to transform the Annex in downtown Galesburg into an agriculture tech-focused incubator. The new space, to be called the 518 Collective, is set to open in mid-2026 and aims to drive innovation and success within the region
Eric Johnson, Vice President of Advancement with Sandburg, says the facility will feature flexible work areas, private offices, communication booths, boardrooms, a podcast studio, and a shared kitchen space designed to support culinary and ag-food innovators.
“When you look at how that’s going to be a benefit, it’s really that we’re going to try and provide access to experts. We’re going to offer workshops and cutting-edge technology resources that could help improve operations. It’s going to provide opportunities to explore new markets that may be out there, but also to inspire and innovate, you know, give an opportunity for people both at our campus locations,” says Johnson. “We’re talking about the agriculture series, not only at our main campus in Galesburg, but possibilities to do some remote programming right here in Monmouth and down at our Carthage campus, there in Carthage, Illinois.”
The facility will offer opportunities to engage with others as well as provide space and resources for organizations such as FFA and 4-H.
