Roger Craig Bice, 77, of Abingdon, passed away peacefully at 3:42 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Roger was born March 30, 1948, in Victoria, the son of William W. and Dorothy D. (Craig) Bice. He was raised with strong Midwestern values, hard work, loyalty, and a deep appreciation for family and community. He graduated from ROVA High School in 1966, where he was actively involved in 4-H, forming friendships and life skills that stayed with him throughout the years. He continued his education at Robert Morris College, earning his Associate of Applied Science degree in 1968, and later completed his bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University—a reflection of his determination and commitment to bettering himself.

Roger married Victoria Sims, and together they welcomed two children, Donavan and Katrina, who remained the pride and joy of his life. Though their marriage later ended, Roger’s devotion to his children never wavered. For more than 41 years, he shared a loving and steady companionship with Diane Shugart of Abingdon. Their bond was built on loyalty, laughter, and countless shared memories.

Roger is survived by his son, Donavan (Tara Boone) Bice of St. Augustine, Illinois; his daughter, Katrina (Tom Schultz) Smith of Henderson, Illinois; his beloved companion, Diane Shugart of Abingdon and her two boys, Derek Shugart of Dahinda, Illinois and Darrin Shugart of Abingdon; five grandchildren, Shailee, Hunter, Chandler, Emma and John; and three great-grandchildren, Cruz, Aura, Miley and one on the way, who brought immense pride and happiness to his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A dedicated and dependable worker, Roger spent more than 40 years as a telephone technician and representative, earning the respect of colleagues and customers alike. He took great pride in his work and the relationships he built along the way. In addition, he worked as an oversized load escort-a role he absolutely loved and wore like a badge of honor. He enjoyed the open road, the sense of responsibility, and the stories that came with the job. If you knew Roger, you likely heard one or two of those stories.

Roger had a gift for friendship. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed gathering with friends for a cold drink, sharing laughter, and spending evenings at the bowling alley in friendly competition. Those simple moments—good company, good stories, and a little rivalry on the lanes—were some of his favorites.

Roger will be remembered for his steady presence, quick wit, strong work ethic, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the stories he told, and the many lives he touched.

In accordance with his wishes, Roger will be cremated. A Celebration of his Life is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 1:00-4:00 pm at the Abingdon American Legion Post#381, with arrangements entrusted to Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services. Memorials may be made to a Knox County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society in memory of his father, William Bice. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
