Advanced Rehab and Sports Medicine is reminding people to pay attention to posture as shoulder pain continues to be a common issue.
Clinic Manager Doug Price says spending long hours sitting at computers or looking down at phones can cause people to slump forward, leading to shoulder problems over time.
“What bad posture leads to, if you can envision, we’ve all been there, or we are all there right now. We’re sitting more, we’re at computers more. As you sit there, we kind of slouch and get into this rounded midback position. When you round your mid back and slump over, then your shoulders round forward too. What that does is throw off how the shoulder is supposed to move. Then we start overusing the upper trap muscles, the chest muscles tighten up, and that’s what can lead to shoulder impingement.”
Price says getting up, stretching, and avoiding staying in the same position too long can help prevent shoulder pain before it becomes a bigger issue.
