Dr. Carl Edward Strauch, 72, of Galesburg passed away peacefully at 10:45 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.

Carl was born August 8, 1953, in Canton, Illinois, the son of Franz and Marjorie Ann (Sappington) Strauch. Raised in Canton, he graduated from Canton High School in 1970 before continuing his education at Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1974. He then attended Northern Illinois University receiving his Master’s degree in 1975. Driven by a passion for medicine and service to others, he pursued further studies and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria in 1979. During his time in Peoria, he met the love of his life, Debra Kumpf. They moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan for his residency and the two were united in marriage on October 25, 1979, in Walker, Michigan.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 46 years, Debbie; his son, Chris (Molly) Strauch of Normal, Illinois; his daughter, Laura Strauch of Peoria; his sister, Barb (John Morgan) Strauch of Canton; and his granddaughter, Brenna Barr, along with nieces, nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

For more than four decades, Carl dedicated his life to caring for others. A respected physician board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative care, he first established a private practice before continuing his career with Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Throughout his years in medicine, he became known not only for his clinical expertise but also for his kindness, humility, and ability to put patients at ease with his quick wit and gentle sense of humor. To countless individuals and families, Dr. Strauch was more than a physician, he was a trusted confidant, advocate and friend.

Although he officially retired on December 31, 2021, Carl’s commitment to serving others never truly ended. In retirement, he continued caring for residents of the Knox County Nursing Home and patients with Hospice Compassus, of which he was an integral part of starting in the Galesburg area.

Carl believed deeply in giving back to the community that had given so much to him. His leadership and service touched many organizations throughout Knox County. Over the years, he served on the Knox County Board of Health, YMCA Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity of Knox County and District #205 Board of Education and was a member of Noon Rotary Club, serving as a past president. Whether lending his expertise, volunteering his time or helping guide important decisions, he approached every responsibility with integrity and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others.

An avid sports fan, Carl could be found rooting for his beloved Purdue Boilermakers, the Cubs, Bears, and the Fighting Illini. He loved watching a variety of sports and coached many youth sports teams. He enjoyed running outdoors, working out at the Y, reading, especially non-fiction and biographies, doing crosswords and other puzzles and watching Jeopardy!.

Faith was also a cornerstone of Carl’s life. A dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church, he faithfully served as a deacon, trustee, and elder and participated in numerous church committees. His quiet devotion, thoughtful leadership, and servant’s heart left a lasting impact on his church family and the wider community.

Those who knew Carl will remember a man whose accomplishments were many, but whose character was even greater. He was intelligent without pretense, generous without seeking recognition and steadfast in his love for family, friends, patients, and community.

His legacy lives on in the lives he healed, the organizations he strengthened and the family he cherished.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Carl’s Life will be held later this summer, with times and locations to be announced.

In accordance with Carl’s wishes, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, the Rotary International Foundation or the Noon Rotary Foundation.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is honored to assist his family with arrangements. Online condolences may be offered at www.h-p-w.com.
