Elbert Walter Hess “Shag”, 58, of Galesburg, died at 7:11 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2026, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, following a short illness.

He was born on June 2, 1967, in Graham Hospital in Canton.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Mary Henness of Galesburg; a son, Nicholas Hess of Galesburg, brothers, Bill Cassell of Galesburg and Brad Henness of Washington state; sisters, Kimberly Davis of Galesburg and Beth Henness-Gambotz of Florida; grandchildren, Jordan Hess Jr. and Journey Hess; and aunts and uncles, Rosa and Larry Collier, Kathy Ford, Pat and Reta Kehl, and Ron and Moreen Henness. He was preceded in death by his son, Jordan Hess Sr.

Shag was happiest being in nature, especially time spent fishing.

Cremation has been accorded. To reflect his love of nature, his remains will be laid to rest privately at the East Linwood Cemetery Scattering Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to the OAKS Senior Center. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral and Cremation Services is honored to serve the family.
