Kenneth “Ken” LeRoy McCone, 93, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at his home with his beloved wife, Mary, by his side.

Born on May 9, 1933, in Long Beach, California, Ken was the son of Harold and Jeanette (Clayton) McCone. He graduated from high school in Long Beach in 1952 and spent his early years farming in Lakewood, California, while continuing his education at a local city college. His strong work ethic, which would define much of his life, was evident from an early age.

Ken answered his country’s call when he was drafted into the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served honorably and was awarded the China Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of his military service. While in the Navy, he also served aboard the USS WASP. He remained proud of his time in uniform throughout his life and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #2257.

Following his military service, Ken built a career marked by dedication and reliability. He worked as a bricklayer for the Lakewood Fence Company before spending more than 19 years as a warehouse supervisor for Beckman Instruments. He later worked as a truck driver for Laura Scudder’s Company. No matter the job, Ken was respected for his dependability, steady nature, and willingness to lend a helping hand.

Beyond his work, Ken found joy in music, fellowship, and community involvement. While living in California, he was a member of the Buena Park Community Chorus and the Moose Lodge in Yuba City. Music remained a cherished part of his life, especially after moving to Galesburg.

One of the greatest blessings of Ken’s life came when he met Mary Phipps. Their love story led them to marry on September 12, 1992, in Incline Village, Nevada. Together they shared more than three decades of love, companionship, faith, and music. As members of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Ken and Mary faithfully sang in the church choir, creating lasting friendships and enriching worship through song.

Those who knew Ken will remember his gentle spirit, quiet strength, devotion to his family, and deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. Whether serving his country, working hard to provide for his family, or lifting his voice in song, Ken approached life with humility, kindness, and grace.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 34 years, Mary McCone of Galesburg; his niece, Melody Severson of Long Beach, California; his brothers-in-law, Joseph Phipps (Mary) and their son, Duncan Phipps, of Fairfield, Iowa; and John Phipps (Leslie) and their children, Shara Phipps, Jeremy Phipps, and Joshua Phipps, of La Mirada, California; and sister-in-law, Margaret Phipps, of Galesburg, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael McCone; his sister, June Severson; and his parents.

Ken’s wish was to be cremated. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held Sunday, June 7, from 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Galesburg Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 3:45 p.m., with Joann Johnson, Joseph and John Phipps officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Knox County Honor Guard at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or to VFW Post #2257.
