American Legion Baseball 3rd Division Tournament Update after Day One

The American Legion Baseball 3rd Division Tournament got underway yesterday at Sherrard High School. All eight teams were in action in the first round of the double elimination format. The top four seeds all advanced to the winner’s bracket semifinals.

Top-seed Rock Island Post 200 had no problem with Princeton Post 125, winning 10-1. Rock Island improved to (28-6) overall on the season. 4th seeded East Moline Post 227 knocked their Quad Cities rivals, Moline Post 246 to the losers bracket with a 10-4 victory.

6th seeded Abingdon Post 381 lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel to 3rd seeded Oneida Post 727 1-0. Oneida scored a run in the bottom of the 1st and held on as only three total hits were made in the game, two of those by Abingdon. Evan Hook went six innings on the mound for Abingdon, giving up only one hit with six strikeouts. Abingdon falls to (4-10-1) on the season and will try to stay alive in the tournament today taking on Milan Post 569 at 3:00 in teh loser’s bracket.

Milan was sent to the loser’s bracket by losing to 2nd seeded Galesburg Post 285 6-3. Galesburg broke open a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Post 285 banged out 10 hits in the game, with two apiece from Chance Stewart, Nico Ojeda and Alfred Ayala. Keegan Smith threw the first four innings for Galesburg, giving up six hits, two runs with six strikeouts. Galesburg, now (17-5) will play Oneida at 3:00 this afternoon for a chance to move on to Friday’s winners bracket championship. A loss by Galesburg to Oneida will send them to the losers bracket at 5:30 today against Moline.

The American Junior Legion tournament is going on in Galesburg this week at HT Custer Park. Galesburg has won their first two games, beating Oneida 8-6 on Tuesday and Annawan 10-6 yesterday. Galesburg will take on Jerseyville today at 3:00 in the winners bracket championship. A win by Galesburg today would sent them to the tournament championship on Friday at 3:00, where they would have to be beaten twice.
