The Fourth of July weekend is almost here, and Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer is reminding residents to celebrate safely.

“Obviously, everybody’s going to be out celebrating. It’s the 250th anniversary of our country. Great time to celebrate, but you need to do it safely. Don’t drink and drive. If you’re going to drink and partake in the festivities, stay at the location you’re at. If not, have a designated driver to get you home safely. The other part is fireworks. Everybody likes to have the fireworks. They are illegal in the state of Illinois, and if you choose to do that type of thing, do it safely, please.”

Switzer says extra officers will be out over the holiday weekend, and anyone who sees an emergency should call 911. For non-emergency questions, you can call the Monmouth Police Department at 309-734-8383.
