Crop dusters have been a common sight over area fields this summer.
Pete Schellenberger, better known online as Crop Duster Pete, is in his eighth season as an aerial applicator and is working in the Monmouth area for the first time.
Pete says there are a few things people should keep in mind when they see planes working nearby.
“When you see us out there, we’re just trying to get a job done. We’re not trying to show off. As long as you give us our space, we’re not going to hurt you. Our job is to protect ourselves and the people around us. If you’re going to stop and watch, make sure you’re upwind, not downwind, and let us do our job. We appreciate you all being so hospitable to us up here in Monmouth.”
Pete says crop dusters also have to watch for power lines, trees, fences, wildlife, and changing wind conditions while flying just a few feet above the crops. He can also be found on Instagram under Crop Duster Pete.
