The Galesburg Intermodal Ag Export Project is continuing to move forward.

Knox County Area Partnership President Ken Springer shares how the project could help local ag producers.

“This is an ag-focused project. It will create a new export market for area ag commodities. Basically, it’s going to be a facility where area ag producers can bring in commodities onto railcars, and then those railcars will be shipped west on the BNSF rail out to the West Coast ports for export. Currently, if you want to reach the West Coast, a lot of that ends up going down the river and then out and around through the Panama Canal. This is a direct overland route using the BNSF rail.”

The project received a $25 million federal Department of Transportation grant in 2025. Springer says construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2027 following a 60-day public comment period.
