As technology continues to play a role in today’s classrooms, being the new Superintendent for the West Central School District, Eric Lawson says he will evaluate how devices and artificial intelligence are being utilized before making any changes:
“In one of my interviews at West Central, I had mentioned that in my previous district, I was going to pilot a situation where I had two sections of 5th Grade and for one of my 5th Grade sections, I was going to take the Chromebooks away and the other section I was going to allow to use the Chromebooks and see where the data took us. I still may pilot this at West Central, but I know it has been on the radar at West Central. There were some current concerns about the amount of time that students were spending on their devices. I think it is something that, as the new Superintendent coming in, I want to monitor and I want to assess the amount of time that our teachers are using or implementing the use of technology in the classroom before I make any type of major decisions,” informs Lawson.
“Artificial intelligence is something that I want us to embrace. I think we can use it as an asset and as a tool because it is not going to go away. I think there needs to be some parameters. There needs to be some guidelines put in place to make sure that students understand the rules behind using artificial intelligence,” Lawson adds.
Students in the West Central School District return Wednesday, August 19th.
