Mrs. Dixie L. Bell, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 7:40 p.m. Monday, September 14, 2026, at her home, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.
Dixie was born September 25, 1941, in Galesburg, the daughter of Lawrence Everett and Hazel Mae (Hood) Shepard. She married Gayland L. Bell in East Galesburg, Illinois. Gayland preceded her in death on March 26, 1990.
Dixie was a devoted homemaker who found her greatest joy in caring for her family. She was happiest when she was cooking, baking, and making sure everyone around her was taken care of. Her home was a place where family gathered, memories were made, and there was always something good to eat. She gave her time and love generously and took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Dixie is survived by her children, Lloyd Bell, twins Terry and Jerry Bell, and Yvonne Bell, all of Galesburg; three sisters, Grace (Todd) Kivisto of North Henderson, Illinois, Lori (Randy) Hatch of Galesburg, and Bernadine Collis of Knoxville, Illinois; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gayland; her son, Leland, in 1985; three brothers, Lawrence Shepard, Owen Shepard, and David Shepard; and two sisters, Mary “Joann” Allen and Meredith West.
Dixie leaves behind a lifetime of love and memories that will be treasured by her family. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared and the lessons she passed down will live on through the generations of her family.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2026, at Abingdon Cemetery, with Pastor Chris Nissley officiating.
Memorials may be made to the family to establish a memorial at a later date.
