The nationwide initiative, Safe Routes to School Program, encourages communities to create safer and more accessible ways for children to walk, bike, or roll to school. According to Superintendent Ed Fletcher, the City of Monmouth, Illinois Department of Transportation, United School District, and the Monmouth-Roseville School District are collaborating on a community travel plan:
“Basically, we are trying to identify barriers that kids might have for active transportation to school. We are going to try and come up with some solutions to make that safer for kids for walking and biking so that kids feel better about doing that and parents feel better about sending their kids off on those routes. Every morning, you see kids walking to school. I am not saying the routes right now are unsafe, but if we can make them more safe, then I think everyone would feel better about that.”
Additionally, Superintendent Fletcher announces upcoming events within the Monmouth-Roseville School District; Family Night for Kindergarten through 6th Grade is Thursday, September 24th from 5:30 to 7 pm at Lincoln Early Childhood School and the Multilingual Family Picnic will be Wednesday, September 30th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Pattee Park.
