It’s been an interesting week for United athletics, with wet bulb heat forcing several outdoor events to be postponed or cancelled.
The United girls golf team was able to get in one match last Thursday, picking up a narrow 200-201 win over Orion. Abby Kendall and Paige Christian led the Red Storm, both shooting 44s.
The boys golf team also got in one meet Monday at Indian Bluff, falling to Alleman 180-193. Lucas Horner led United with a 47.
On the football field, the Red Storm fell to Illini West 38-24 in Week 2, dropping United to 0-2 on the season.
The United volleyball squad also had a busy week, finishing 2-4 while facing some tough competition. The Red Storm picked up wins over ROWVA/Williamsfield and Rockridge.
Another fall sport also got underway this week, as the United/Monmouth-Roseville/Galesburg girls swimming co-op opened their season against Dunlap.
United Athletic Director Jeremy Sharp says sophomore Izzy Feehan could be in for a big year.
“I think she’s gonna have a breakout sophomore year. I really do, and I’m excited for her. We hosted Dunlap over at Galesburg, and Izzy took first in the 200 freestyle, third in the backstroke, and first in the 400 freestyle relay. She’s gonna be nice for us over there, and Galesburg’s got the tradition of being powerful swimmers, so hopefully we just got to keep going with that.”
Feehan and the swimming co-op will be back in the pool Saturday at Macomb.
