Mr. John J. Mahnesmith, 68, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly at 10:57 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at his home.
John was born on September 22, 1958, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Leonard and Velda G. (Douglas) Mahnesmith. He married Brenda Foster in 1992.
John is survived by his two daughters, Genny Mahnesmith and Christina Mahnesmith, both of Galesburg; his brother, Leonard M. (Alice Puckett) Mahnesmith of Galesburg; a special friend, Julie Bayne of Galesburg; and his sisters-in-law, Shari Mahnesmith and Robin Beavers-Mahnesmith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald “Gary” L. Mahnesmith and Daniel W. Mahnesmith.
John attended Galesburg area schools. Throughout his life, he worked various side jobs, with much of his work focused on lawn care and roofing. He also worked for a time on Block Farm.
John enjoyed motorcycles and riding, fishing, mushroom hunting, spending time outdoors, and being with his family. He will be remembered for the time he shared with those he loved and the simple pleasures he enjoyed throughout his life.
In accordance with John’s wishes, his body will be donated to science.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Galesburg Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family for a charity of their choosing.
