While Halloween is known for being a day of ghosts and witches, the University of Illinois Extension is adding a new meaning with its Native Seed Share event. This beginner-friendly event brings together gardeners and naturalists to exchange seeds, learn gardening tips, and explore local plant diversity, says Wendy Ferguson, communications and marketing coordinator.

“You can bring seeds if you’ve already collected some, but it’s not necessary, and you can then learn about how to plant them, where the best place to grow them is, and go home with free seeds,” says Ferguson. “But it is a really good opportunity. Our master naturalists will be there to answer all your questions, and it’s another opportunity to really learn about gardening with native plants that are good for our environment.”

The Native Seed Share event will take place October 31 at the Owsley Wildlands in Macomb from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
