Fighting Scots’ Holmes Scores Three Goals in Home Lacrosse Loss

The Monmouth College women’s lacrosse team returned home with a Midwest Lacrosse Women’s Conference loss to the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday night. The Scots (0-12, 0-6) fell to the MWLC leaders by the score of 17-5.

Trailing 2-0 the Scots got on the board with 10:08 to play in the first quarter. Elizabeth Schmidt (Waverly, Iowa) scored an unassisted goal, her team-leading 20th of the season. The Scots grabbed another goal with 1:07 to go in the quarter as Kaylee Doebert (Mount Horeb, Wisconsin) scored to cut the Bennies lead to 6-2.

Down 10-2, Monmouth scored with 2:20 to play in the half. Mac Holmes (Clive, Iowa) scored her 12th goal of the season, assisted by Schmidt. The Bennies scored twice before Holmes scored on a free-position shot with 1:04 to go and the Scots trailed 12-4 at the break.

St Benedict triggered the running clock and pushed the lead to 17-4 before Holmes scored her third of the game with 9:13 to play.

Holmes scored three goals with Schmidt and Doebert scoring one each. Goalkeeper Lea Selquist (Peru, Illinois) made 16 saves and Anna Davison (Bettendorf, Iowa) led the Scots with four ground balls.

The Scots will conclude the season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against Cornell College. Monmouth will honor five seniors for Senior Day in a pre-game ceremony at 2:50 p.m.
