GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team began its defense of its Arrowhead Conference title with a 25-9, 25-23, 25-19 sweep of Highland on Tuesday at John Lewis Gym.
For the Chargers (10-3, 1-0), who were among those receiving votes in this week’s NJCAA Division II rankings, the victory was their 14th in a row at home, and they pushed their conference win streak to 12 matches.
An 8-1 stretch in the first gave Sandburg a 14-4 advantage, and the Chargers took the final six points in the set, capped by three straight Natalie Burden kills and an Addison DeSpain ace.
A 7-0 run in the second vaulted the Chargers to a 15-13 lead, and a Burden kill off a Grace Vyhnanek assist gave Sandburg set point at 24-21. The Cougars won the next two points before Burden put down another kill for a two-set lead.
Sandburg’s only deficit in the third came at 10-9 before a 4-0 run put the Chargers ahead for good. DeSpain polished off the sweep with a kill and a block on the final two points.
Burden tallied a team-leading seven kills in the victory, and Vyhnanek had 13 assists. The Chargers totaled 14 blocks, including five from Grace Evans. Ayla Cannon and DeSpain each had three blocks. Mooney picked up 24 of Sandburg’s 35 digs on the night, and DeSpain served two aces.
