One week removed from a thrilling home win over the Kewanee Boilermakers, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans football team found themselves back in action on Friday night, taking on fellow Three Rivers Conference large school division member Mendota.
It didn’t take long for Monmouth-Roseville to get out in front, as senior back Payton Thompson broke through for a 40 yard touchdown on first play, while on the next drive Nick Huston punched one in from 10 yards out to jump to an early 14-0 lead. The Titans defense was able to help make life easier for the other side of the ball, as Andy Myers pulled down an interception to set up the Titans with good field position to end the first quarter. With that field position, Myers upped M-R’s lead to 21-0 on a 22 yard QB keeper to open up the second quarter. The ensuing offensive drive for Mendota would end the same way, after a strip sack fumble forced by Nick Huston and recovered by Ivan Godina, set up sophomore Landon Montroy for another Monmouth-Roseville. Before the first half of play ended, the Titans would score twice more on a 5 yard score from Andrew Way and a 59 yard touchdown run from Payton Thompson to push the Monmouth-Roseville lead to 42-0, forcing a running clock for the entirety of the second half.
The enforced running clock would force a quick second half, but that didn’t stop the Titans from finding a way to keep some action going. To open the half, M-R’s defense forced yet another turnover as junior defensive back Elliott Rogers’ pick set up Elijah Noel for another rushing touchdown for the Titans, the 6th different player to score for Monmouth-Roseville. Mendota was able to tack on a field goal, and a touchdown from junior Wyatt Austin to cut the final score to 49-10 in a dominant win for M-R. In the stat book for the Titans, Payton Thompson led a host of Titans running backs with 118 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 6 attempts, passing wise Andy Myers completed both of his attempts for 49 yards and Nick Huston led in receiving with 39 yards on his lone grab. With the win Monmouth-Roseville improves their record to 4-0 to open the season, and they will look to take their momentum into a huge home game next Friday night, against undefeated state ranked Princeton on homecoming weekend.
