The Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes are off to a strong start to the 2026 season, improving to 3-1 after a big 33-26 win over Farmington last Friday.
A-Town trailed 13-7 at halftime but battled back in the second half. The Tornadoes took the lead late on a fourth-down touchdown pass before the defense came up with one final stop to seal the win. The victory also secured A-Town a spot in the postseason under the new IHSA playoff format.
Now the Tornadoes turn their attention to the United Red Storm, who enter Friday night at 0-4 but have shown plenty of ability on offense through the first part of the season.
Head Coach Rick Quinn says United presents plenty of challenges, especially at quarterback.
“They present a lot of challenges for us defensively. I think their quarterback is phenomenal. He is a special athlete, big kid, he’s athletic, he’s got a cannon for an arm. I think the thing that’s so scary about him is his ability to extend plays. I cannot tell you how many times on film I’ve seen him run around for eight to 10 seconds and then fire the ball 50 yards downfield. We’re going to have to find a way to contain him, get pressure on him, hit him early and kind of get him off target.”
A-Town will host United Friday night as both teams open conference division play. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM, and we will have the broadcast on WRAM AM 1330, FM 95.7 and online at radiomonmouth.com, with the pregame show beginning at 6:30.
