The Abingdon-Avon Tornado football squad ended the regular season with a record of (7-2), tying Havana for the LincolnLand South Division championship. A-Town started the season (4-1), including an impressive win over Farmington. A-Town went (3-1) down the stretch with a solid win over (6-3) South Fulton in the regular season finale. The only losses for the Tornadoes came to fellow co-champ Havana and an 8-point loss to (8-1) Annawan-Wethersfield.
It’s been, by far, the most successful regular season since going (10-1) in 2021. It’s no surprise for an A-Town football team that the offense has been potent, scoring an average of 33 points a game. The defense has been solid all season, as well, especially in the latter half of the season. The Tornadoes pitched a pair of shutouts against a high-powered United offense and the LVC co-op. That defense held one of the state’s leading rushers, Riley Foglesong of South Fulton, to 152 yards in week nine. However, over half those yards came on one play, an 80 yard touchdown run.
First up in the postseason for Abingdon-Avon will be the (2-7) Morrison Mustangs. The two wins for Morrison include a week-1 victory by forfeit and a narrow 21-20 win over (1-8) Dakota. Tornado head coach Rick Quinn says despite his club being a heavy favorite, you can’t take anything for granted in the playoffs.
Ninth-seeded Abingdon-Avon will host Morrison at Abingdon-Avon High School on Friday night at 7:00 in the IHSA class 1A Opening Round. The winner will move on to play at 8th seeded Fisher in the First Round of the playoffs next week. The Fisher Bunnies are also (7-2) and average over 40 points a game on offense.
