The City of Galesburg invites community members to learn more and share input on the proposed improvements for East Main Street (from Grand Avenue to I-74) at the second public involvement meeting.

Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2026

Time: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Location: Galesburg Public Library (264 W. Main Street)

The project will reduce the number of travel lanes to one in each direction, with a center turn lane. A traffic study indicated that a three-lane configuration is sufficient to accommodate the volume of traffic on this section of East Main Street, even after accounting for projected future growth. The additional space will accommodate updated sidewalks on the north side and a shared-use path on the south, both with ADA-compliant curb ramps and buffer space separating pedestrians from traffic. In addition, aging infrastructure will be upgraded, including storm sewer improvements to enhance drainage during heavy rainfall, as well as traffic signal upgrades and asphalt pavement resurfacing.

This project is currently in the preliminary design phase, funded through the State Highway Safety Improvement Program grant. Additional funding would need to be pursued to advance the project into the final design and construction phases. If funding is secured, construction would still be several years away. This meeting provides an early opportunity for community members to view project renderings, ask questions, and submit feedback.
