Monmouth College’s Women Swimmers Sweep Friday Meet, Men Beat Knox

The Monmouth College men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in a double dual meet against Quincy University and Knox College at home on Friday night. The women won both meets, beating QU 93-72 and Knox 122-40 while the men beat Knox 94-45 but lost to QU 106-47

Women

The women started the night by winning the 200 yard medley relay. Jaidlyn Sellers (Tremont, Illinois), Lauren Johnson (Pekin, Illinois), Mady Gaus (Herscher, Illinois) and Andrea Tapia (Merrillville, Indiana) took the event in 2:07.51.

Sellers won the 50 free in 26.15 with Tapia finishing third in 30.46. Sellers also won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.67, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of the next swimmer.

The Scots took the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke. Johnson won with a time of 1:20.95 with Tapia in second at 1:22.38 and Katie Oberheu (Fort Worth, Texas) took third in 1:23.60.

Nicole Fitch (Marengo, Illinois) took second in the 200 IM in 2:28.50 and third in the 100 freestyle in 1:01.29. . Gaus was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.65

Evelyn Schaefer (Stoughton, Wisconsin) was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:22.92, just ahead of teammate Kaitlyn Fox (Villa Park, Illinois). Schaefer also finished second in the 500 freestyle in 6:24.66 with Fox in third at 6:28.44

Ashling Staunton (Chicago, Illinois) joined Fox, Johnson and Oberheu to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:01.52.

Men

The Scots lone win of the night on the men’s side came in the 200 freestyle relay. Jayden Wilbon (Crown Point, Indiana), Finn Van Dyke (Lawrence, Kansas), Brady Hild (Tremont, Illinois) and Camden Schmidt (Washington, Illinois) took the event in 1:39.25, winning by nearly 40 seconds over Knox.

Hild took second in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.56 and second in the 500 freestyle in 5:54.19. Tristan Kennon (Flossmoor, Illinois) took second in the 100 free in 50.46 and third in the 50 free in 23.15.

Schmidt finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.38, just ahead of teammate Ethan Main (Oneida, Illinois) at 1:08.83 Van Dyke Took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.70.

The Scots will next be in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a road meet at Augustana. Friday’s meet was the first for Monmouth since a multi-day meet at Principia College Dec. 2-3.
