The 31st Anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is this Saturday, May 13th. Homeowners are encouraged to place non-perishable food items by their mailboxes to be collected during the largest single day food drive in the country, says local Letter Carrier Amanda Schneider:
“We are distributing cards and also bags. They can fill up that bag or any bag. They can put it inside the mailbox, around the mailbox, just visible for either I or somebody driving around, which we will have volunteers to pick those up. Anywhere safe that is visible and has easy access. We don’t want to miss those, but if by chance we do miss them, we will get them the next day. Just hang tight with us and be patient, it is a long day.”
Locally, Jamieson Community Center will be the recipient of the collected food donations and Executive Director Nancy Mowen shares which items are in the greatest need:
“Right now we could use anything. One reminder for people, it must be in the original packaging and sealed. We can’t accept open food and also when it is coming from the community, we have to honor expiration dates. We are providing staple foods so vegetables, canned fruits, grains, pasta, anything that is a shelf stable grain would be appreciated; proteins like canned tuna or chicken, and peanut butter.”
During the Stamp Out Hunger food drive in 2022, 41.2 million pounds of food was collected across the United States.
