John C. Hughs, 81, of Galesburg, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

John was born on October 30, 1941 in Gilson. He was the son of John L. and Margaret (Duncan) Hughs. Surviving John are his companion of 39 years, Pat Washabaugh of Galesburg; children, Rhonda (Mark) Bryant of Lake Warren, Susan Washabaugh of Rock Island and David (Kim) Washabaugh of Danville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Devon (Josh) Wyman, Taylor (Kristi) Shores and Cole Washabaugh; two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Hadley Shores; a brother, Joy Hughs of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bonnie Shultz and brother, Darrell (Ruby) Hughs.

John was a 1959 graduate of Knoxville High School. He was a salesman and delivery driver for Tom’s Snack Foods for 20 years, retiring in 2003. John loved fishing, hunting and flea marketing. He also enjoyed selling old refurbished tools, and garden tools, fishing poles at his stand on the corner of North Street and Henderson Road during the Scenic Drive. Most of all, John loved to spend time with his family.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Friday June 23, 2023 at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory, Knoxville. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral services. Burial will be at Gilson Cemetery. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory have been assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.
