John Henry Larson

John Henry Larson, 97, entered his heavenly home on December 10, 2023.  He was born to Henry and Nelle (Johnson) Larson on April 21, 1926. His grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Larson and Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Johnson, so John Henry was a predetermined name! He had one sister, Mary Jelks. They grew up on the farm near Altona experiencing the end of the horse farming era, he later enjoyed raising Percheron horses to hobby farm small fields and give many wagon rides for small groups and community events. The horses almost became a part of the family, with Colts being named by the grandchildren.

In 1944 at the age of 18, he went into the army where he was soon “informed” that he had volunteered for the combat engineers. He told many stories about the war, the friends he made, and the calluses and blisters they endured. He saw how evil could take over a country and felt and smelled the destruction of his fellow man on both sides.

Upon returning to Altona, he resumed farming with his father. After going on a date with Thelma Louise Dykeman, they were married in 1950. They enjoyed 73 wonderful years together and raising four children, Dennis, Jim, Bob, and Carol. He was an active member of the Altona American Legion for 77 years and also served as a Walnut Grove Township Supervisor for 18 years. A faithful member of the Methodist Church in Altona, John attended every church service regularly until his health prevented him from going. John joked about the fact that he was born the exact same day and year as the queen of England and how he had a goal outlive her, which he accomplished!

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; sons: James (Donna) Larson of Oneida, Robert (Carol) Larson of Altona, daughter, Carol Larson of Altona; six grandchildren, Julie (Adam) Martin, Joe Swanson, Erick Larson, Jennifer Swanson, and Emily (Josh) Mcaffe; four great grandchildren; Darrien Swanson, Aiden Martin, Peyton Martin, and Laykin Martin, also eight nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son; Dennis Larson, and one grandson; Jeff Larson.

Thank you to OSF Hospice, Western Home Health caregivers, friends, and family who helped with John’s Care.

All friends and family are invited to John’s celebration of life at The Grove Community Church in Altona Illinois on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation will be held from 10 am until time of services, with Pastor Scott Cramer officiating. Burial will follow the funeral in the Altona Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Grove Church.
