Julian C. Bruening

Julian C. Bruening, 87, of Monmouth, IL, passed away at 2:45 am on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Allure of Lake Storey in Galesburg, IL. 

Julian was born on May 29, 1936 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Clarence C.E. and Alice G. (Grosz) Bruening. He was raised and educated in Rockford, IL. He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master’s of Library Sciences degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. While in college, Julian played on the basketball team. 

Julian served in the United States Army.

Julian married Carolyn S. Woodbury on July 21, 1961 in Portland, IN.

Julian was the head librarian for the Warren County Library for over 23 years before retiring in 2007. 

He enjoyed traveling, playing tennis, and ping-pong. He owned several harness racing horses. 

Survivors include his two children, Julie Bruening and Jeff (Rikki) Bruening; five grandchildren, Lindsay (Eddie) Olewinski, Amanda Bruening, Zach Bruening, Samantha (Corey) Ellingwood and Riley (Matt) Valtierra; and great-grandson, Will Ellingwood. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm, Saturday, February 24, 2024 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth, IL. Beginning with a time of sharing and remembrance at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warren County Library or the Buchanan Center for the Arts and sent to the funeral home. Cremation rites have been accorded.
