The Illinois State Police (ISP) continues its investigation into a Macomb Police Officer involved shooting that occurred March 16, 2024 at approximately 10 p.m. when officers responded to a call of an active domestic disturbance in the 900 block of N. Charles St., Macomb. The Macomb Police Department requested ISP investigate the incident.

After reviewing body worn camera video, evidence, witness interviews, and autopsy reports, preliminary investigative findings indicate officers encountered the subject with a knife. The subject then ducked out of view of officers and emerged holding a 4-year-old child in front of his body while holding a knife around the child’s throat and another around the waist. Evidence shows an officer fired one shot from his firearm and both the subject and the child suffered fatal gunshot injuries. According to the McDonough County Coroner, the adult subject is 57-year-old Anthony T. George. Per the coroner’s policy, juveniles’ names are not released.

ISP has met with the families of both the child and the subject. Once its investigation is final, ISP will provide all investigative reports and evidence to the McDonough County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is available at this time.

Update to Domestic Violence / Officer-Involved Shooting

At approximately 10:00 PM on Saturday, March 16th, Macomb Police Officers responded to the
900 block of North Charles following multiple 911 calls for an active domestic violence incident
at that location.

Upon arriving, officers observed blood in a common area of the complex and heard screams for help coming from inside an apartment. After announcing their presence and forcibly gaining entry to the residence, Macomb Police Officers discovered a 36-year-old female occupant who had numerous visible injuries and was bleeding from multiple stab wounds. The female occupant was removed from the apartment and received medical attention. Officers also observed a male suspect in the apartment who was armed with a knife.

In an event that unfolds in a few seconds, the male suspect refused to comply with multiple commands to drop the weapon. While still armed, the male suspect reached into a room, briefly disappearing out of sight of the officers, before returning into view. Fearing for their safety, a Macomb Police officer discharged one round from their duty weapon fatally striking the male suspect. There was also a minor child deceased at the scene and an autopsy is scheduled for later today which will determine the nature and scope of their injuries.

In the interest of transparency and pursuant to department policy, the investigation of this incident is being conducted by the Illinois State Police (ISP) and the McDonough County State’s Attorney. An autopsy has been scheduled and medical related questions should be directed to the McDonough County Coroner. Also per department policy, the Macomb Police Officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave, pending further investigation.

On behalf of the Macomb Police Department, I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the families of all involved in this tragic incident.

Additional inquiries regarding this investigation should be directed to the Illinois State Police at isp.pio.personnel@illinois.gov.
