Beyond the Call: Supporting Small Town First Responders

Firefighters, EMS, and police officers encounter and see a lot that the average person generally won’t ever experience. Having a set of tools to cope with those circumstances is very important, especially with small town departments, shares Community Chaplain Brad Bone:

“Our job is to give them tools, physically, mentally, and spiritually of how to maintain a healthy mind and body and avoid some of the stresses they could end up taking home. People will look at the Chicago Fire Department and think that must be a really high stress job, they have a lot of fires, but lately our guys are staying really busy with that too. The other issue with small town departments that a lot of folks don’t think about is almost every medical call, if you grew up here in Monmouth, it is more than likely somebody you know. As you see people suffering, there is typically a little bit more personal investment in that. I think that is something that smaller departments encounter that some of the bigger ones don’t have to deal with.”

Additionally, this Memorial Day weekend, the Roseville Volunteer Fire Department will host their 71st Annual Fish and Chicken Fry Saturday, May 25th from 4 to 7 pm and the Kirkwood Fire Department’s Memorial Day Breakfast is Monday, May 27th form 6 to 10 am.
