This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Michelle Rickard, Community Engagement Specialist with the Knox County Health Department, is reminding women of the available services to qualifying individuals through the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program:
“We serve Knox, Warren, and Henderson Counties. We do breast exams and mammograms for women 40 to 64 and pap tests and pelvic exams for women 21 to 64. They must be without insurance or those that are underinsured. Being underinsured, is many of us that have insurance. So, you may have coverage for screenings once a year for the mammogram or cervical; however, one in three people may get called back for any further testing for diagnostic. That is when it all starts coming out of pocket, high deductibles, which many have these days. The great thing is, this program can cover that, which then helps women to want to go because then they are not scared of that high dollar out of pocket cost.”
Throughout the month of October, the Knox County Health Department is collaborating with Graham Health System in Galesburg for Mammo Mondays, offering walk-in mammograms from 8 am to 4 pm each Monday in October.
