At 4:22 PM, Thursday September 26, 2024, the Macomb Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 221 S White St. The first arriving units arrived on scene at 4:27 PM and observed smoke showing from the first floor and roof. The on-duty crew began an interior attack and located the fire behind the front door and was extinguished. Overhaul was completed and the fire was deemed under control at 5:08 PM and cleared the scene at 8:00 PM. Fire crews were paged back to the scene at 06:03 am this morning for a fire in the same location. Fire crews extinguished the fire and completed overhaul and cleared the scene at 08:19 AM.

One firefighter was treated on scene for a minor injury and was released, no civilian injuries were reported.

No smoke alarms were sounding at the time of arrival.

The structure sustained fire, smoke, and water damage throughout and has an estimated loss of $32,000.

The fire cause is undetermined and remains under investigation by the Macomb Fire Department.

Four on-duty Macomb Firefighters initially responded with additional off-duty firefighters called back to assist on scene and to cover other calls for service. Emmet-Chalmers FPD also assisted with coverage for the city. Thank you to Macomb – McDonough County Communications Center, Macomb Illinois Police Department, Emmet-Chalmers FPD, Macomb Public Works, Lifeguard Ambulance Service of Illinois, and Ameren IL for their assistance with the fire.

I would like to remind citizens that if you do not have functioning smoke alarms, please call the department and we can assist you through our Be Alarmed Smoke Alarm installation program.
