After Monmouth College baseball dropped their first series with Knox College since 2017, the Fighting Scots stood at 5-6 in Midwest Conference play, staring at 6th place. The Scots need to finish in the top 4 of the standings to reach the Midwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. Monmouth had a chance to jump back into the top-four last weekend with a 3-game series with Cornell. Sports Information Director, Nathan Baliva, recaps the Scots three game series starting at Cornell on Friday.

The Scots had plenty of help from local products, as United High School alum Aidan Parkins was 5-for-11 with six rbis. Another United High School graduate, Toby Turnquist was on the mound this weekend in game two, throwing six innings, allowing three hits and giving up two runs while picking up the win for the Scots. Owen Wolfe, a Galesburg High School alum, appeared in two games for the Scots, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and surrending just one run while grabbing the win in game 1. Former Sherrard Tiger, Clayton Matkovic, locked down left field for the Scots over the weekend. Matkovic was 5-for-12 with three rbis at the plate. Brandon Coats, graduate of Illini bluffs, saw action in game two, throwing three innings while allowing no runs or hits. Coats picks up the second save of his career. Monmouth College moves to (13-17) on the season and (8-6) in Midwest Conference play. The Fighting Scots are currenlty in 4th place in the MWC, with a one game lead over Knox and Ripon at 6-6. In a tight conference standings, the Scots are also just one game back of Illinois College for first place, but Monmouth loses the tiebreaker because of Illinois College’s double header sweep of Monmouth in March. The Fighting Scots upcoming conference schedule includes 1 game with Illinois College on Wednesday at Glasgow field. Monmouth will finish out the MWC regular season with a 3-game series at home against Beloit College this weekend and a 3-game series at Ripon.
