Story by Parker Cassidy
West Central picked up a very nice road win last week at Flanagan Cornell Woodland. The Heat came out firing in the first half, led by junior running back Aidan Garner, who had a 50-yard touchdown run, a 92-yard touchdown run, and punched in another 14-yard score, all in the first half. After Garner’s third touchdown, the Heat led 24 to 16 with a little over a minute left in the half. The Heat weren’t satisfied just yet, as Graham Kelly joined in on the fun, punching in a one-yard run with just three seconds to spare before halftime, giving West Central a 32-16 lead at the break.
Flanagan Cornell Woodland tightened things up in the second half, battling back to tie the game at 32 apiece. Things stayed even until late in the fourth quarter when, who else but Aidan Garner, broke the tie with his fourth touchdown of the day, his most important of the night, as it proved to be the game-winner. The West Central defense held strong down the stretch, allowing the Heat to take home a 40-32 victory.
Head Coach Jason Kirby says this was a great team win as they move one step closer to the postseason.
West Central improved to 6-1 after the win, and they will be back on the road this week as they travel to take on a familiar foe in the Bushnell Prairie City Spartans, who currently sit at 1-6, with an impressive 64-62 victory over Peoria Heights just two weeks ago. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Bushnell on Friday.
