With winter here and in full force, City of Monmouth officials are reminding downtown business owners to take extra care when treating sidewalks for snow and ice. City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says businesses along the Public Square and nearby blocks should avoid using salt on the newer concrete.
“I would also like to remind business owners along the Public Square and the 100 blocks that this is newer concrete out there. We are asking businesses not to use salt because that will cause damage to the surface of the concrete, simply because it has not had time to completely cure. We are using sand, and we will provide sand at no cost to business owners who would like to use that. We are asking them to please not use deicing agents on that sidewalk. It is a big investment, and we certainly do not want it to become pitted.”
City officials say using sand instead of salt will help protect the sidewalks and extend the life of the concrete.
