Arrest Made in 200-Gallon Fuel Theft

McDonough County Sheriff Nicholas Petitgout has issued the following update regarding the arrest of Curtis E. Yazvec, 35, of Vermont, Illinois.

Over the past two weeks, McDonough County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated the theft in rural New Salem Township. The complainant reported that approximately 200 gallons of fuel had been stolen from their fuel barrels. Video evidence helped point Deputies to a suspect.

On February 17, 2026, Curtis E. Yazvec, 35, of Vermont voluntarily met with Detectives at the Sheriff’s Office and admitted to the theft of the fuel.

Curtis E. Yazvec was charged with Theft over $500.00 and processed and released with a court date by McDonough County Jail Staff.

The McDonough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this crime and more arrests are probable.

The McDonough County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that there are many ways to protect rural properties in McDonough County and video surveillance is key in solving crime.

All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
