Members with the Knox County Area Partnership are gearing up for their second trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with legislators and federal agency staffers to gain support and secure funding for local infrastructure projects. Executive Director Ken Springer shares two major projects they are lobbying for:

“One is the South Street underpass replacement. That is a project that the City of Galesburg applied for a couple of federal grants in this year’s budget cycle and this is also a project we took out to Washington, D.C. last year. This project is actually really important; it is a health and safety thing for local residents. It is very difficult to get emergency vehicles through, but also an efficiency and safety improvement for BNSF, which is our largest private employer in the Galesburg area. It is also a critical access point both for the South Side of Galesburg and Knox College,” says Springer.

“Then the second item that we are going to be taking out is we will be seeking funds for new city water wells that will further improve water quality in the City,” Springer adds.

Springer reports a team of about six individuals will make the trip to Washington, D.C.
