Technology is advancing daily, especially in the field of healthcare. With the recent addition of the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, surgeons are able to perform minimally invasive procedures with less pain and quicker recovery times for patients. President at OSF St. Mary and Holy Family, Zachary Yoder, informs a new ION robotic bronchoscopy system has now been added:
“In order to be competent at those things, like robotics, you have to do them often. So, it is not something you can do one or two days a week, you have to do them every hour, every day, because those physicians have to be competent and they have to be continuing to work on their skills. At St. Mary’s, we got a new robot, we have a new ION robot as well, states Yoder.
“Robotics surgery is very safe and effective. There is a lot less trauma that happens in the body from robotics, there is a lot less infection risk. We are really one of the first hospitals in the area to offer this robotic service, especially around bronchoscopy, which helps with some of our lung diseases. There is a lot of early detection that we are doing with some of this,” Yoder adds.
Early detection can be lifesaving. Yoder encourages individuals to talk with their primary care physician to schedule those yearly health screenings.
