Here’s your Athletes of the Week for week ending March 15th.
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is girls track and field sophomore, Layla Katile. Layla posted a top ten finish in the shot put event in her first meet back from a serious knee injury suffered last summer. Her toss of just over 31 feet at an indoor meet at Illinois College was good enough for 9th place out of 38 total throwers. Layla’s distance was under a foot from a top-five finish.
The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is freshman softball player, Natali Postin. The Red Storm began their season with a mercy-rule win over Lowpoint-Washburn and Natali had a big hand…..or bat….in the victory. She went 2-for-3, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 more. One of Natali’s hits was a triple.
The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is boys track and field junior, Aidan Garner. What a great start to the track season for Aidan at the Lincoln Trail Conference Indoor Exhibition. He posted three individual top-3 finishes. Aidan was 2nd in the 60 meter dash and 3rd in the 200 meter dash and long jump event.
The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is sophomore softball player, Taylor Lee. Taylor was strong in the batters box AND in the pitching circle in her team’s season opening win over Abingdon-Avon. She went 3-for-3 at the plate, with all three hits being for extra bases. Taylor was also lights-out in the circle, pitching a 1-hit shutout, with 11 strikeouts in five innings.
The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is sophomore boys track and field athlete, James Shuey. James puts the “athlete” in “athleticism”. So far in this indoor season, he’s earned nine top-10 finishes. In his most recent meet at the LTC Exhibition Meet at Monmouth College, James was 2nd in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and 4th in the triple jump.
