A unique and fast-growing Scrabble weekend returns to Galesburg April 11–13, bringing together players from across North America for competition, community, and a live online broadcast.
The Galesburg Spring Fling tournaments (April 11–12) will feature dozens of players competing in multiple divisions, including several ranked among the top 50 on the continent. Among them is 2023 North American Scrabble Champion Josh Sokol, who will be both competing and joining the live commentary team.
The weekend will conclude on April 13 with a special National Scrabble Day livestream, part of an annual celebration of the game that draws viewers from around the world.
Hosted in a welcoming, small-town setting, the Galesburg Scrabble scene has quickly gained a reputation for its friendly atmosphere, strong competition, and community involvement. Players and visitors can expect not just tournament play, but social gatherings, local food, and a chance to experience one of Illinois’ most historic cities.
A driving force behind the event is Galesburg Mayor Peter Schwartzman, who has helped grow the local Scrabble community and position the city as an emerging hub for the game. “There’s a real energy building around Scrabble in Galesburg,” said Schwartzman. “We’ve got great players, a fantastic community, and a city that loves to welcome visitors. This weekend is about competition, connection, and showing people what Galesburg is all about.”
All tournaments are sanctioned by the Word Game Players’ Organization (wordgameplayers.org) and are open to players of all skill levels. Newcomers are welcome.
