Mr. Jay Richard Freburg, 78, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Allure of Lake Storey.

Jay was born on August 24, 1947, in Avon, Illinois, the son of Forrest T. and Mary (McDonald) Freburg. He grew up in the area and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1965. Soon after, Jay proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, serving from 1966 to 1968. His time in the service was a point of quiet pride throughout his life, and he remained connected to his fellow veterans as a member of the former Cambridge American Legion.

Jay dedicated many years of hard work as a chemical operator for Gold Star FS in Cambridge, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability before retiring in 2013. Outside of work, Jay embraced life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer who spent many enjoyable hours on the greens at Valley View Country Club in Cambridge, where he found both relaxation and camaraderie.

A man of Christian faith, Jay lived with a steady, grounded spirit. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his dedication to his family, and the easygoing presence he brought to those around him. When his children were younger, Jay devoted his time to coaching their football and baseball teams, creating lasting memories along the way. His lifelong love for the Chicago Bears was something he proudly shared with his children.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dalton (Catrina Guel) Freburg of Galesburg, Jayme (Ben) Taylor of Paris, Tennessee and Bradley (Cheryl) Freburg of Charlotte, North Carolina, and his beloved grandchildren, Hana Freburg, and Jaxson, Stevie Jo, Ashton and Jimmy Taylor, who brought him great pride and happiness. Also surviving is his dog and faithful companion, Maggie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John, in 2012.

In accordance with Jay’s wishes, cremation will be accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and announced when arrangements are complete. Memorials may be made to Knox County Veterans Assistance in his honor.

Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services, Abingdon Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be shared at www.h-p-w.com.
