On June 22, 2026, shortly before midnight, the Macomb Police Department received a report of shots fired in the 400 block of North Prairie Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim had fled the scene and sought assistance at a nearby residence. Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported to McDonough District Hospital, where he was stabilized before being transferred to a trauma facility for further treatment. At this time, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The ensuing investigation revealed that the suspect, later identified as Decory Coleman Jr., fled the scene on foot and concealed himself inside an apartment at Prairie View Housing. Through the cooperation of an acquaintance of the suspect, Macomb Police officers were able to safely locate and apprehend Coleman. He was taken into custody without incident.
Coleman has been charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Aggravated Battery. During the investigation, officers recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the incident.
Investigators determined that the victim and suspect were known to one another. Based on the information gathered, this is believed to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Macomb Police Department was assisted by the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, the McDonough County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety, and the Illinois State Police.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
