In January of 2025, the Social Security Fairness Act, concerning the Windfall Elimination Program and Government Pension Offset was signed into law. This Act eliminated the reduction of Social Security benefits while entitled to public pensions from work not covered by Social Security. According to Strom Center Director Carol McCrery, if you are a retired teacher, you need to make sure you are receiving the correct benefits now:

“It might be something that somebody wants to look into if they are a retiree, a teacher retiree, just to make sure. I know they have not reduced their Social Security, but that they are getting what they should.”

If you have any questions on where to turn next regarding Social Security benefits, reach out to the Strom Center team at 309-734-5677.
